Gillian Gratton Beloved Owner of Pet Planet Primrose & Advocate for Animal Welfare Has Died

The Saskatoon community is mourning the unexpected loss of Gillian Marie Gratton, a passionate animal advocate and owner of Pet Planet Primrose, who passed away suddenly on April 11, 2025, at the age of 39.

Known for her boundless compassion, radiant smile, and deep love for animals, Gillian touched the lives of many through her work, friendships, and unwavering commitment to the welfare of dogs. New Hope Dog Rescue, an organization close to her heart, paid tribute to her, writing:

“Though we grieve, we celebrate the life of our friend Gillian Gratton. Gillian was a tremendous supporter of New Hope Dog Rescue both personally and through her business, Pet Planet Primrose. More than that, she was a dog lover and a friend to each of us. You would be hard pressed to find Gillian without a smile on her face, a warm greeting for all, and a treat in hand for any furry friends who came to the store.”

Born on November 26, 1985, in Calgary, Alberta, Gillian was the second child of Ron and Simone Gratton and the beloved younger sister of Curtis. Her academic journey was as impressive as her character—graduating from Bishop Carroll High School before attending Mount Royal University and the University of Calgary. In 2007, she moved to Saskatoon, accompanied by her Portuguese Water Dog, Gambit, to complete her Bachelor of Science and later a Master’s in Veterinary Biomedical Sciences at the University of Saskatchewan.

Gillian spent a decade at the university working as a Lab Technician in Animal Studies, where she played a pivotal role supporting graduate students and research projects. Her expertise and nurturing nature made her a cherished colleague and mentor.

In 2011, Gillian met the love of her life, Kevin Freistadt. The couple married in 2015 and settled on an 80-acre property where Gillian found peace walking her dogs through the aspen forest and tending to her koi pond and gardens. Their home became a sanctuary not only for them but for many animals they cherished.

An active participant in the Canadian Kennel Club Conformation and breeder of Armada Portuguese Water Dogs, Gillian’s passion for animals extended far beyond her home. She was a dedicated supporter of New Hope Dog Rescue and a prominent figure in the Saskatoon dog community.

Gillian also maintained a lifelong love of horses, which she rekindled in 2017 with her horse Chevy. Her energy and enthusiasm spanned both the dog and equestrian worlds, where she made countless friends and lasting memories.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, Gillian brought a long-held dream to life by opening Pet Planet Primrose in 2021. She had worked at Pet Planet since she was 18, even while pursuing other professional goals. Her store became a community hub—a place where pet lovers and their furry companions felt welcomed, seen, and supported.

Gillian is survived by her husband, Kevin; her parents, Ron and Simone; her brother Curtis (Kristin), and their children Sophia, William, and Jack; her grandfather, Edward; father-in-law Clayton; brother-in-law Bob (son Dirk); and extended family, including Wendi Stoeber and Edmond Lemire. She leaves behind a vast circle of family, friends, and community members who will continue to feel her absence deeply.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, April 17, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Saskatoon Funeral Home, 338 – 4th Avenue North, Saskatoon, SK.

In honour of Gillian’s legacy, donations may be made to New Hope Dog Rescue or STARS Air Ambulance.

Gillian Gratton’s legacy is one of love—for animals, for people, and for the simple, beautiful moments in life. She will be remembered not only for what she built, but for how she made others feel: seen, supported, and always greeted with a smile.
